Utility Power: Expensive & Unreliable vs. Solar Power
Traditional Energy Process
1. Generation: Fossil fuels like coal & oil
2. Transmission: Energy travels from remote plants
3. Distribution: Long-distance travel
4. Consumption: High electricity bills

Modern Solar Energy System
Solar Panels: Convert sunlight into energy
Inverter: Converts solar energy for home use
Battery: Stores solar energy for use later
Electric Meter: Tracks energy and earns credit

Solar power is wonderful,
it’s just not flexible
A growing family, hotter summers, or that new electric vehicle. Energy needs tend to go up and up. But fixed systems limit solar output. That leaves homeowners with three options.
1. Size your system to meet today’s needs

Future needs covered with:
Your panels will meet your needs today. If you start using more energy, you’ll need to buy it from the utility.
2. Size your system to meet future needs

Future needs covered with:
Your increased energy usage in the future will be covered by the larger system, but you’ll have to pay for that extra solar energy from day 1.
3. Add a second system later,
when needs change

Future needs covered with:
If your fixed system size no longer meets your energy needs, you can add a second solar system. This requires additional hardware and repeating the solar journey.
Step 1 – Installation with Future Vision
We design a system to meet your energy needs today, but install enough panels and batteries to also cover tomorrow's needs.

Step 2 – Pay Only for What You Use Today
Start with a low monthly bill that covers your current needs. Tap into extra capacity later, when you really need it.

Step 3 – Extra Energy When You Need It
When life changes—a new electric car, more heat, or a growing family—you simply activate your additional solar capacity. No construction, no hassle.

Frequently Asked Questions
It’s very simple. For customers who expect to increase their energy usage (which often happens after installing solar), Flex offers great value. We don't recommend Flex to those who know their usage will stay the same or decrease—for example, if your family is moving or you spend part of the year in another home.
Your savings potential depends on three factors: how much energy you use and when you use it, how your utility company charges you, and how much energy you get from Sunrun and at what cost. While we can’t guarantee exact savings, Sunrun Flex is designed to maximize your potential through lower rates and battery storage.
The utility company credits the excess energy sent back to the grid through the Net Billing Tariff (NBT). These credits are valued at wholesale rates and help reduce your bill. Any remaining credits roll over to the next month.
You’ll always have at least a small utility bill. Even if your solar system meets 100% of your energy needs, you’ll still pay basic connection fees to stay linked to the grid, plus any extra electricity you use.
